XO is a retro sci-fi RTS being developed by Jumpdrive Studios in Portland, OR. Working closely with the lead designer and engineer, I designed the functionality and visual styling of all elements of the user interface.
As an RTS with a lot of visual information to present on the screen concurrently, my first priority was to ensure that information didn't get lost or occlude other necessary elements. It was also important to make sure what the player needed to access could be done quickly and efficiently. I kept nesting to a minimum, relied on mouse-over modules, and tried to keep persistent UI elements to a minimum. Most UI information is contextual and accessed as needed in the game.
